Billy Bob’s wins its first Country Music Club of the Year Award from the Academy of County Music. To date, Billy Bob’s Texas has won this award 12 times.
A young singer from South Texas named George Strait opened for Billy Joe Shaver. Strait arrived at Billy Bob’s in a pickup truck with his gear stored in a small trailer. By the time he returns in July as an opening act for Doug Kershaw, Strait had released ‘Strait from the Heart’, which features his first No. 1 single, “Fool Hearted Memory,” as well as “Marina Del Ray” and “Amarillo by Morning.”
Beginning in September and running through October, Billy Bob’s hosts the world’s richest bull riding, with an $80,000 payoff – a purse that would set the stage for the big-money bull riding events of the 90’s.
Billy Bob’s also hosts donkey basketball – all the rules of normal basketball, except all the participants ride on donkeys.
Reba McEntire headlines Billy Bob’s for the first time. A few months later she had her first No. 1 hit with “Can’t Even Get the Blues.”
